Failure to Protect Seniors and Failure to Uphold the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
Ontario
When Premier Doug Ford promised “an iron ring of protection around our seniors from COVID-19” on March 30, there were 40 deaths resulting from outbreaks in 41 long-term care homes, according to an April 1 survey by the CBC.
Less than a month later, according to the latest figures from the Ontario government, there are now 671 deaths from COVID-19 with outbreaks in 150 long-term care facilities, and these grim numbers increase every day.
That accounts for 75% of the 892 people who have died from COVID-19 in Ontario.
More than 2,500 residents in long-term care homes have tested positive for COVID-19, along with almost 1,200 staff, including five deaths, which led to a devastating deterioration in the care of residents in many homes.
